As an adult, you may find routines to be tedious and boring, however your child does not see it that way. Children who have a routine are better behaved and it also provides a sense of security which calms them.
Here is an example of a bedtime routine you may find helpful. (There is no shame in writing it down and keeping it posted until you get use to the routine too!)
Try and start bedtime routine at the same time every night about 30 minutes prior to bed. Make this mellow time (no tickling or racing)
Example: our bedtime routine checklist:
Cup of water (optional) some kids need that last swig before laying down
special cuddle blanket or animal (maybe both)
night light installed
teeth brushed
attempt to go potty or diaper change
specific number of book picked out- let the child help choose
Once this routine has been established it will be easier for you as a parent, create quality time, inspire imagination through reading, and help your child feel safe, secure, and ease into sleeping.
Give it a try for a week or two and see if this helps.
